Perched gathering 'nooks' capitalise on outstanding views

PROJECT:
Caloundra Headland Coastal Pathway
Client:
Sunshine Coast Council
location:
Caloundra, Sunshine Coast
scope:
Design Development
Detailed Design
Tender Documentation
budget:
$1.6M

Perched atop the Caloundra Headland, the coastal pathway capitalises on foreshore amenity, to create an enhanced recreational experience for residents and tourists alike.

Through careful construction detailing and selection of materials, the pathway weaves through and is nestled within the upper vegetated embankment, thereby amplifying the natural beauty of its surrounds whilst minimising visual intrusion when viewed from the beach. Seating and gathering nooks accommodate rest points along the pathway, taking advantage of stunning views and vistas, framed by vegetation, to the ocean and beach below.

Other elements and considerations included:

> Provision of shared and equitable access

> Integration of existing plaques, as part of the Caloundra Headland Memorial Walkway

> Integration of the boardwalk & path amongst existing trees and revegetation

> Picnicking and seating nooks

> Lighting for pedestrian safety & amenity

> Minimisation of ongoing burden & maintenance

Utilising Sunshine Coast Council’s Conceptual Design, O2LA collaborated with lead consultant TOD Consulting and Sunshine Coast Council for detailed design and documentation of Phase 2, which connects west of Albert Street and extends to the eastern edge of Centaur Park.
