Broad open vista to ‘common’ encourages interaction and anchors entry

PROJECT:
Vantage Parklands
Client:
Peet
location:
Gladstone, Queensland, Australia
scope:
Central Park
Linear parks along waterways
Pocket parks
Hardworks & Softworks
budget:
$1M (est.)

The landscape design for Vantage utilizes and strengthens the site’s natural features of undulating topography, existing mature bushland, waterways and associated open space which weaves through the site. The tributary dissects the site and creates a ‘natural’ buffer for residents whilst also providing ‘visual relief’ for built form. The need to cross the tributary also provides the opportunity to create an interesting pedestrian/cycle route, a timber boardwalk and viewing/outlook opportunities for residents.

Vantage’s central parkland is dominated by an open kick-about lawn area and is overlooked by shade structures, barbecue area and children’s playground. Alongside the park is a revegetated tributary which provides natural amenity for park users, enhances the ecological value of the waterway and leads residents to nearby linear parks alongside the tributaries. Pedestrian /cycle paths provide links through the community and to parks, such as the hillside of retained existing mature Grass Trees (some reaching over 3.0m high) and other informal pocket parks which incorporate playgrounds, pathways and shaded open lawn areas. O2 Landscape Architecture is involved in landscape master planning, detailed design, construction and post-construction services.
