Break-out space with a view promotes study and play

PROJECT:
UQ Hamon Centre
Client:
University of Queensland/TVS Architects
location:
Gatton, Queensland, Australia
scope:
Break-out space
Building surrounds
Entry
Hardworks & Softworks
budget:
$150K

The Hamon Centre’s break-out space provides an open gathering area which takes advantage of the easterly aspect and distant views to the countryside and mountains. Spilling out from the 300 seat lecture theatre and 80 seat seminar room, its custom designed seating walls (which incorporate external GPO’s) offers students outdoor studying & relaxation opportunities. The walls also help enclose the space whilst interpreting the ‘raw’ elements from original uses on the site.

Shade is provided via new canopy trees and an existing mature Poinciana, which helps define and frame the entry while providing immediate ‘softening’ of the built form. The landscape design was also completed in accordance with UQ’s stringent Design Standards.
