The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame is one of Australia’s most well-known and iconic destinations. Set amongst the rugged, yet vibrant rural landscape and community of Longreach, it was vital that the landscape works for this project be reflective of the iconic themes that Australians and International visitors have come to associate with the Outback.
Working throughout the concept and detailed design phase of the project, O2LA liaised with local suppliers to ensure availability of selections and also undertook a detailed survey of the plant species in Longreach during our site visit, working with local native plant lists to ascertain the viability of specific plant species.
Our re-imagining of this landscape focused on revealing the hidden gems that lay within the existing landscape by creating a series of outdoor spaces for visitors to gather and to rest. These newly imaged spaces celebrate the colours of the outback, provide respite from the heat, encourage views to the distant plains and reveal the vintage architecture and materiality of the buildings.
Outdoor spaces include:
The Billabong zone:
- New boardwalks and viewing platforms making it easier for accessible access to the Billabong along with accessible pavements in outback colours;
- Plant species chosen to emphasise the feeling of being in a desert ‘Oasis’;
- Furniture selection with an emphasis on Australian suppliers and Outback colours allowing up to 100 people to sit and dine around the Billabong; and
- Relocation of important historic plaques and monuments from the outskirts of the buildings to the Billabong.
A new Café Garden formed the opportunity for a borrowed landscape to be viewed from boardwalks and inside the Café. Diners from the café view an iconic Bottle Tree at the centre of the landscape surrounded by gravelscapes remnant of the surrounding landscape.
The Entry Road will soon be upgraded to include:
- A double row of feature trees that would provide colour on a grand scale as an entry to the Outback Oasis buildings;
- Garden beds with native plant species and gravelscapes; and
Seating for those wishing to walk the ‘Explorers way’.
